In the suburbs of Nouméa, the Saint-Louis tribe was established around a Catholic mission at the beginning of New Caledonia’s colonization, as a settlement for Kanaks displaced from their ancestral lands. Saint-Louis, both a tribe and a district of the Caledonian capital, has historically been a stronghold of the independence movement. In recent years, it has become a site of unrest and violence driven by the youth of the tribe. Several young people from this tribe lost their lives in clashes with the French gendarmes.

Saint-Louis, une histoire calédonienne gives the floor for the first time to young people of this tribe. Free words that highlight the difficulties of a Kanak youth who has remained on the edge of the path of a « common destiny », celebrated by Caledonian and French politicians from all sides for more than thirty years.
